Equities: Mixed signals as risk story shifts – BNY

FXStreet Insights Team FXStreet

BNY’s Bob Savage says global equities are posting another weekly gain, led by technology, even as Oil and the Dollar rise and risk-off momentum in iFlow accelerates. Equity outflows have intensified overall, but flows into core government bonds remain resilient. The report stresses that changing correlations are challenging risk parity strategies as stocks and bonds increasingly move together.

Risk parity strained by shifting correlations

“The U.S. stock market is set for another weekly gain, making the run-up in risk the best since 2023. However, correlations for risk are mixed. On the day, oil is higher, as is USD.”

“Both of these usually mean lower global equities, but shares are buoyant, led by technology, while bonds are bid. The news headlines also provide mixed signals on the prospect of a quick resolution to the U.S./Iran conflict, while the economic focus does not fit the narrative either: Japan’s April core CPI was the lowest in four years, while German sentiment rose in the May ifo survey.”

“Risk-off momentum has accelerated, with iFlow Mood falling to its weakest level since the “Liberation Day” volatility episode in April 2025. Equity outflows have intensified, while flows into core government bonds have remained resilient.”

“The need for a change of narrative shows up most clearly in the current risk parity programs, which are driving stocks and bonds to rally or fall together. The unofficial start of summer this Memorial Day weekend in the U.S. will be a time to rethink the war and 2026 investment mixes.”

Editor’s Picks

EUR/USD retreats below 1.1600 on persistent USD strength

EUR/USD remains subdued for the second successive day, trading slightly below 1.1600 on Friday even after the data from Germany highlighted a slightly improvement in business sentiment in May. The pair faces headwinds as the US Dollar remains firm, supported by rising odds of hawkish sentiment surrounding the Federal Reserve policy stance amid uncertainty over a US-Iran peace deal.

GBP/USD stabilizes above 1.3400 despite weak UK Retail Sales data

GBP/USD struggles to find direction and fluctuates in a tight channel above 1.3400 on Friday as markets pay little to no attention to the disappointing UK Retail Sales data. Investors await fresh developments surrounding the US-Iran conflict following reports suggesting that sides are making progress towards a peace deal.

Gold keeps looking for direction above $4,500

Gold trades lower for the second consecutive day on Friday, but remains contained within previous ranges, with downside attempts limited above the $4,500 line for now. Market volatility remains subdued on Friday, with traders awaiting developments from the US-Iran war to make investment decisions.

Three reasons the Zcash upward trend could take a breather

Zcash (ZEC) price extends its correction, trading below $656 after a massive surge earlier this week. Weakening derivatives and on-chain data, alongside bearish divergences in momentum indicators, suggest the current rally may be overheating and vulnerable to a near-term cooldown or reversal.

Week ahead – US PCE inflation in focus amid Middle East uncertainty, RBNZ decides on rates

After recording its strongest week in two months, the US dollar traded in a consolidative manner this week, with the dollar index oscillating between 98.80 and 99.40. The greenback started Monday on a strong footing following fresh Middle East tensions, including hostile rhetoric between US and Iranian officials, as well as drone attacks.

Why the Pound is starting to trade like an emerging-market currency

The Sterling is the second-weakest G10 currency against the US Dollar this year, and with GBP/USD cracking through 1.3400 to its lowest since early April, the textbook relationship between rising yields and currency strength has stopped working.
